Viscosity Standards

Calibration of viscometers and verification of viscometer performance is as easy as measuring a sample. Our viscosity reference standards are in effect samples with certified values in kinematic viscosity, dynamic viscosity and density. All viscosity standards are manufactured in house in our laboratory in Essex, United Kingdom.

The PSL Calibration Laboratory is a UKAS Accredited Calibration Laboratory, accredited to ISO 17025, Lab No 0247. The PSL Calibration Laboratory maintains a master viscometer scale calibrated to ASTM D2162.

Manufacturing and handling of reference materials is certified under ISO 17034, Lab No 5076. PSL Viscosity Reference Standards are suitable for the verification and calibration of glass capillary viscometers, flow cups, rotational viscometers & Cone and Plate viscometers.
Certified values are provided for kinematic viscosity, dynamic viscosity and density, together with uncertainties of measurement. Use the filter below for suggestions of suitable standards. If in doubt, ask us.

Viscosity Oil Standards

A laminated label on the bottle gives the certified values in kinematic viscosity, dynamic viscosity and density.
Using viscosity oil standards helps ensure that instruments like viscometers provide accurate and reliable measurements, which is crucial for maintaining quality control in industrial processes and ensuring the performance of lubricants and other fluids in various applications.
What is a viscosity oil standard ?

A 500 mL brown bottle containing mineral oil. Certified values in kinematic viscosity, dynamic viscosity are listed on a laminated label attached to the bottle. The bottle is supplied complete with a Certificate of Calibration issued in compliance with ISO 17034 by the PSL Rheotek calibration laboratory.

What is a viscosity oil standard used for ?

A standard material has two main purposes, validation of results and calibration of viscosity measurement instruments.

How do I use a standard for validation ?

To validate the viscosity measurement procedure in your laboratory, you will need a viscosity oil standard, which is similar to the normal production samples. When the appropriate viscosity oil standard has been identified, it is necessary to measure it in exactly the same way, as the production samples are measured. Comparing the results obtained during the measurement with the certified values of the standard will provide valuable information. Ongoing quality assurance in a viscosity laboratory provides confidence in the standard of work conducted by the laboratory.

How do I use a standard for calibration ?

This will depend on the type of viscometer you are using. It is vital to follow the relevant instructions. Typically you will need to use at least two viscosity oil standards with different values in order to establish a new calibration.

What is the traceability of the PSL Rheotek Standards ?

All viscosity oil standard certificates of calibration issued by the PSL Rheotek calibration laboratory are fully traceable to the primary reference in capillary viscometry. The laboratory maintains a master viscometer scale. This work is conducted in parallel with work performed in national institutes of metrology around the world. The primary reference in capillary viscometry is double distilled water at 20 degrees C.
