Glass Viscometers

Where can I buy a capillary viscometer for my kinematic viscosity test work? The PSL Rheotek viscometers are available for next day shipment from the United Kingdom.  We manufacture, calibrate and stock all the standard glass viscometer tubes as per ASTM, ISO, DIN etc. Designs include ASTM Ubbelohde, BSU Tube Reverse Flow, Cannon-Fenske Routine, Cannon-Fenske Opaque and many more. Place your order before 11 am UK time for next day shipping. No minimum order value.

PSL Rheotek glass viscometers are mouth blown from low-expansion borosilicate glass tubing in our glassblowing workshop in Essex.

Calibration is carried out in-house in our UKAS accredited laboratory. All viscometers are supplied complete with an ISO 17025 Certificate of calibration.

Glass Viscometers made in United Kingdom

Viscometer glassblowing | PSL Rheotek

Made in Essex. All PSL Rheotek glass capillary viscometers are manufactured in Essex in the UK. Our scientific glassblowers transform borosilicate glass tubing and capillary bore to first class capillary viscometers.

The glassblowers of today benefit from the experience of generations of glassblowers, who came before them. Poulten Selfe & Lee Limited, the company behind the PSL Rheotek label, has been manufacturing viscometers for nearly 100 years.

The glass viscometers are mouth blown to the tightest tolerances and subjected to rigorous quality inspection. The in-house ISO 17025 calibration laboratory then takes over. Each certificate of calibration is fully traceable to the primary standard in the world of kinematic viscosity.

For measuring transparent liquids, we recommend the ASTM Ubbelohde Viscometer. The constant of this viscometer is temperature independent. Designed with an air arm, which has access to atmosphere, the ASTM Ubbelohde Viscometers returns accurate results using an approximate quantity of sample. All sizes of Ubbelohde Viscometers are available for next day despatch from our warehouse.

For measuring opaque liquids, we recommend the U-Tube Reverse Flow Viscometer.

All PSL Rheotek glass viscometers are supplied complete with a UKAS (ISO 17025)  Certificate of calibration, laboratory No. 0247. All certificates are fully traceable to the Master Viscometer Scale held in our laboratory. Production tubes are calibrated directly against Master References in the on-site laboratory.

How does a glass viscometer work ?

A calibrated glass viscometer measures the kinematic viscosity of a liquid sample under the force of gravity. Using a stopwatch, the time it takes for the meniscus of the sample to pass a certain point on the glass viscometer, is recorded. The kinematic viscosity of the sample is calculated by multiplying the flow time in seconds by the calibrated constant of the viscometer.

Why use a capillary viscometer?

Many test methods specifically require the use of a glass capillary viscometer. The capillary viscometer is very accurate and has a wide range. A capillary viscometer is also reliable, simple to use and cost-effective.

How do I get started with capillary viscometry?

The minimum instrument requirement is the viscometer, a viscometer holder, a stopwatch and a constant temperature viscometer bath. Other accessores for filling and emptying the glass tube may also be relevant.

What certficates of calibration do you offer?

PSL Rheotek capillary viscometers are supplied with a UKAS (ISO 17025) Certificate of calibration. This provides full traceability to the primary reference. Sample certificates for individual viscometers available on the product pages.
